Under the new tax law, the first $10,200 of unemployment comp is not taxable for Federal. But you may have stumbled upon a CA glitch, so I am flagging your post for the Moderator.

California AGI is wrong?

Hi there,

I received unemployment benefits for a few months this year, which doesn't seem to be included as part of my federal AGI in Turbo Tax's calculations -- the AGI they're showing only includes income I earned by working. However, Turbo Tax seems to have subtracted the amount of unemployment benefits I got from my federal AGI to calculate my California AGI. I know unemployment benefits aren't taxable income in CA, but it doesn't seem like they should be subtracted from an AGI that already isn't including them. Is there a reason for this--some glitch resulting from new stimulus package rules? Should I correct this error myself?

Thanks!

I have this same concern, it seems the $10,200 is being deducted twice from the California AGI. My wife and I both received unemployment last year. $20,400 was deducted from our federal AGI and then that amount was transferred to the California return. The full amount of the unemployment we received was then deducted from the transferred amount on the California return.
