I worked for two different groups of one company in two different states. I received a w-2 for federal with total income and I received two state w-2's each with an amount of income in each state. ie., total income of $50K on federal and $30K shown for income in GA and $20K shown as income in CA. How do I input this in turbo tax. Right now, it calculates income itself for each state and it is not the same as on the w-2.

If the EIN number is the same and you work in more than 1 state or city, sometimes they will give you another W2 with the extra state information on it and the top part the same or not filled in. If this is the case, list one W-2 but include both state or local taxes on it. It will let you type in more than one line for boxes 15-20. Don't add the boxes together.

Same for boxes 12 & 14 if there is no room on the first W2 they can give you another W2 with the extra boxes on it. So list them all on 1 W2. For box 12 just enter it in the next row or box. It doesn't have to match the box 12a-d etc.

I tried this as one w-2 and the GA income amount is still higher than shown on the W-2 as GA income. The program doesnt seem to use the figure provided on line 16 as State Wages.

In the calculations, the income for GA is higher than indicated on box 16. Box 16 on the W2 shows $44073.27, but on the GA return shows income of $59752. The CA income comes out correctly. Neither of these numbers is the Federal number which is 62351.83

Follow these instructions and understand why for the 2 wonky w2s:

GA is your resident state and it pulls in all income and taxes it. Your w2 was used for your employer to tell each state how much you made there already along with telling the federal your total.

Now it's your turn to tell them your side of the story.

Return to the w2 area and input only the state amount received in that state.

If same EIN, enter one w2 so federal is right

state $30k GA

add state line $20k CA

delete GA state return

Next you want to do the CA nonresident return to create a tax liability.

Now do the GA return and get a credit for the tax paid to CA, whole income of $50k taxed with a credit.

As for the federal income, you said 50k federal to start and now you have 62k. Where did 12k come from? Spouse, another job or an extra W2 entry that needs to be deleted. Go check your w2's. You may have double your federal income and then subtracted your deduction to get the other number.
