You received a refund when you owed money. If it went into your bank account either:

the bank deposited someone else's money into your account

the state department made a mistake

You need to contact the Department of Revenue and let them know what happened. Be prepared for the money to vanish from your account. The bank may reverse it.

If you received a check, there was an error in processing your return. Again, contact the state department.

My completed return shows I owe the state $704. Instead, I received a refund of $6976. What gives?

A nearly $7000 state refund is unusually high, so you may have been the victim of a scam.
