I am having trouble figuring out how my spouse and I file separately in a different state. I see there are instructions on how to do so, but I still do not understand. Please provide step -by-step instructions on the TurboTax Home and Business Tax Year Software.

Here are the step by step instructions: How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state.

Some states require couples to file separate state taxes, even after filing joint tax returns, if one spouse lived in a different state. Because tax laws differ, check with your state's tax revenue office before filing a return.

If you need to file a Joint federal and separate state returns

You have to use 3 different new returns. One to file the Joint return. Then you each need another new return to fill out fake federal MFS returns to do your separate state returns. You will have to print and mail the state returns.
