I'm confused. Here's the situation. I purchased TurboTax Premier. Very early as I prepared to begin entering data I was asked to pay $40 on my credit card.. I assumed it was for the filing fee for the two states I needed to file a return. When I actually tried to file the state retirns II was told I needed to pay $20 for each state. What was the first 20 for, preparing the state return? If so it's the first time it occurred for me. Perhaps I overlooked something. I can categorically say it was of no value in preparing the state returns.

When I began preparing returns TurboTax directed me to pay $40 to file a return in two states, which I paid. When I attempted to file a return in one of those two states TurboTax said I had to pay $20. How can that be accurate?

E-filing fee in desktop software

Did you purchase desktop software with state software included? They sell Deluxe both with and without state software--so you have to be careful which one you choose. And even if it does have the state software download included, that is for preparing the state. There is an extra fee to e-file the state. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.

@Dale Cattanach It sounds like you purchased the download version but are using the online version of TurboTax. You can check your download order status here. If this has happened you can follow the instructions below to switch from Online to the Software:
