I am looking to amend my federal tax return for 2019, I am just adding in a credit that was overlooked when I orignially filed and forgot about. The credit would offer another refund from the federal govt. My question is do you have to file a state amended return if there isn't a change regarding the information that was filed originally? Michigan is the state in question.

No, unless you are amending your 2019 federal tax return to add the Earned Income Tax Credit. Other federal tax credits will not affect your Michigan return because a credit comes after income and deductions.

Michigan starts with federal income (unchanged). And you are not changing any federal deductions, only adding a credit so there would be no impact to the state.

Ernie, thanks for answering. The only thing I want to amend on my 2019 federal tax return is a credit called the "Retirement savings contribution credit". I did not know about it when I filed last year and I want to claim it. I went in to "amend (change) 2019" return and it prompted me to download the desktop version and reupload my return. I was just confused with the extra process and after I inputed the information it told me to print out and mail the federal 1040x and under the state it said that there is no refund/amount owed but it indicated that the michigan amended return is e-filed? So in conclusion regarding just the retirement savings credit I will not have to do anything futher with the state of michigan?

Thank You again Ernie.

Correct. You will not have to do anything more for Michigan since TurboTax said there was no refund/amount owed. If an amended return is e-filed, since MI-1040 requires Form 1040 to be attached, this will still not require any further action on your part.
