I still don’t understand why I owe state taxes for last year and never owed them before. I did t do anything different all my paperwork remained the same but yet I owed roughly $1,500 for last year. Why?

maybe your return two years ago was wrong.

We cannot see your state return(s) so we do not know the reason for your tax due amount on your most recent tax return. The usual reason is not having enough state tax withheld from your paychecks. Check to make sure you entered boxes 16 and 17 from your W-2(s) correctly. And you could print out your 2018 and 2019 state returns and compare them side by side to see what is different.
