topic 2019 MD State Return in State tax filing

April 7, 2020
We filed a joint 2019 Maryland State Tax return, March 2020; received a State of Maryland Personal Income Tax Computation Notice, dated March 30, 2020, on April 6, 2020.
ISSUE: The amount of estimated state tax applied from our 2018 return differs from that transferred between our 2018 and 2019 Turbo Tax software(s).
We overpaid our MD State taxes by $9002 in 2018. From that overpayment we opted to pay $1776 for 2019 estimated taxes and receive a refund of $7226.
The 2019 estimated tax amount that the Turbo Tax software pulled into our MD Form 502, line 41, 2019 estimated tax payment is $9002, i.e., the total amount of overpayment from 2018 MD-502, line 46. The amount of overpayment to be applied to 2019 estimated tax that we entered in the TurboTax software was $1776. This is the same amount recorded on line 47, Overpayment to be Applied to the 2019 estimated tax, in our 2018 return.
Why did TurboTax transfer the full amount of overpaid tax ($9002, line 46) rather than the applied amount ($1776, line 47) entered for 2019 estimated taxes?
