topic Missing W-2 From Employer - What To Populate for CASDI? Estimate? in State tax filing

Hello,

So during 2019, my previous employer was acquired by another company. I received the W-2 from my current employer but I never received the W-2 from my previous employer.

I was able to obtain all the federal/state wages and withholding from the IRS and CA Franchise Tax Board.

The only number I am missing is the CASDI deduction amount from my previous employer. Do I estimate assuming a full 1% of wages? Which potentially can trigger an excess deduction when considering my current employer deductions. Also, this estimation seems arbitrary because isn't this based on what actually got deducted from my pay?

I tried calling CA Franchise Tax Board, IRS, and CA EDD who all said they can't help me or do not have the information reported on their side. How could this be? Isn't my employer remitting the deductions to the state?

I am sorry you are having to deal with this! You may want to contact your current employer as they may have received access to books and records including payroll information from the previous owners. If not,

Contact the IRS. If you exhaust your options with your employer and you have not received your W-2, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. You’ll need the following when you call:

Your name, address, Social Security number and phone number,

Your employer’s name, address and phone number;

The dates you worked for the employer; and

An estimate of the amount of wages you were paid and federal income tax withheld during the tax year. If possible, you can use your final pay stub to figure these amounts.

If you don’t get your W-2 in time to file, use Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement. Estimate your wages and withheld taxes as accurately as you can. The IRS may delay processing your return while it verifies your information.

Here is a screenshot of California SDI computation and limitations for 2019.
