As a NY resident, need to file State tax return electronically - turbo ta won't let me.

My daughter started a job in 2018. This is the first time she has had to file taxes. The federal tax return must be submitted by mail. That was done.

New York State requires by law that tax returns be submitted electronically. I cannot do this in Turbo Tax as it is looking for the Federal return to be submitted electronically first.

Now what? Do I mail the state return anyway?

Unfortunately due to the TurboTax software restraints, you will have to mail in the New York state return.

TurboTax will not let me file state electroniclally. It did print the return for me so I could mail it, but TurboTax actually printed a page that says "New York State requires this income tax return to be filed electronically" so what do I do?

You may be experiencing a problem trying to e-file if you have a 414(h) in Box 14 of your W-2. TurboTax content developers have identified this issue and found a solution that will allow you to e-file your New York State return.

Please follow the steps below:

Open your return.
Search W-2 with the magnifying glass tool at the top of the page.
Click the Jump to W-2 link at the top of the search results.
Click Edit next to your W-2.
Scroll down to Box 14.
For the Box 14 entries with category New York IRC 414(h) NY tax exempt, enter the letters NOT directly after your existing description input. Please do not include a space
Click Continue
Click File on the left hand side.
Click Start next to Get ready to save and file your returns.
Click Change next to 2020 New York Return.
Select e-file and continue.

A full update will soon eliminate this issue, but this was the provided instructions until that is complete.

Unfortunately I cannot open my tax return to try this. Intuit e-filed my federal taxes, so I can no longer go in and see my return or make any changes. I have tried several times to "amend" my taxes but TurboTax says my Federal taxes have been accepted and I cannot do this. So I am stuck in a Catch 22. TurboTax will not efile my state taxes for me, and I am not legally allowed to file them with paper. I owe them money and want to pay them, but I can't , I am not sure what else I can do now.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2020 online tax return where you can make changes before filing.
