1. I can not file my federal 1040 since i am doing it as married filing separate and my spouse is a non resident and don't have a SS or a TIN yet. according to your instructions I have to print and put a NRA on the SS field over a fake number entered just to be able to finish the form and then only mail it.

2. NY state then says no mailing if done by software like Turbo Tax only efiling but then it requires that the federal must bee file in order to file the NY state.

what should I do?

You can file your NY return by mail. NY states that you must electronically file your state return if your software allows you to. You have a situation that requires you to mail your federal return. Since you cannot electronically file the federal return, you can file the NY return by mail.

Hi

I am still a bit unclear on why I can file may Federal and NJ State taxes electronically but I cannot file my NYS Non-Resident tax electronically. We file married joint but I work only in NYC and my husband and I live in NJ and he works only in NJ. Is it because it's non-resident? It's quite maddening to me.

Thanks to anyone who can give me a real reason why in 2020 this is still an issue.
