I got a letter from my state tax return where they are asking to identify my identity, is this normal or what is going on?

Many states are taking extra steps to prevent fraud, so a request to verify your identity could be random--and normal.

we can't see the letter. it could be legit. if your not sure, go to the state website and get a phone number to call. if it's the same as in the letter it's legit. just because it isn't doesn't mean it's not legit.

what happened, at worst someone filed a return using your social security number. there are other possible reasons since the the IRS did not send you a letter.
