I'm using a desktop version of TurboTax downloaded from a CD. I'm processing returns for 2 or 3 family members who all earned income in only one state (Virginia). The software states "Your copy of TurboTax includes one free state" - Does this mean I can only download Virginia state tax software, or does this have the more restrictive meaning that I can only process one Virginia return for one person in my family?

You can use the one free State program you have for all your family members. There is a charge to e-file a State return.

since you have the desktop version you can download for free just one state but use it for as many returns as you want.

there is an efiling fee for states except new york

and I believe there are 5 free federal efiles included.

And FYI -

Be sure to save frequently, go up to File-Save or Save As. Save each return with a name you can tell apart from another one. Especially if another return has the same name or initial. Like a father and son. Or if you have the same name the second return might overwrite the first one.

The tax returns end in .tax2019 and should be saved in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax folder.

To start a new return go up to File-New
