topic State return in State tax filing

My husband received a check in March of 2019 for $340 from a state he previously worked in during 2018 and this was added to his W-2 under the other state he was in. So the W-2 had two states listed. While doing my taxes I am sure it said Good News you don't have to file a state tax return for the $340 because we did not itemize in 2018. However at the end TurboTax Deluxe wanted to add the multiple state & charge $39.99 for the state it said I didn't have to file. Now I am afraid to file and not include it so not sure how to go forward. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

If this was a refund of taxes paid to the state then no you do not need to file in that state since you took the Standard Deduction for 2018.

If you look at the personal section of TurboTax it asks it you earned money in another state besides your resident state. If you answer Yes then is asks what state. If you the only money you received from another state was a tax refund the answer to this question would be No.

It wasn't a state refund, the $340 was a check he received as a safety bonus he earned while in Colorado but was paid to him in March of 2019 so it was listed by his employer under the state of Colorado and the rest of his earnings came under our state of residency.

You would only be required to file a Colorado non-resident state return if you had enough income to have a tax liability for 2019. With such a low amount of income, you are not required to file a Colorado return. Please view the Colorado revenue page for more information.

If you preview or print a copy of your return, TurboTax should print out a copy of any instructions you need.

If you are mailing in your State Tax return, you will need to attach any W2's or 1099's with state withholding to the return.

I filed my state tax and received papers saying I sent in w2s from 2017,2018 and 2019. I was incarcerated for all of 2017 and I was released from prison october of 2018 and filed in 2019 for my 2018, I received both my state and federal tax return for the 2 months in 2019. I was told to do an amendment for my state tax return ...how do I go about doing that?

If you need to amend your state for 2019 and the changes are items that only apply to the state for 2019 if your return has been accepted you log into your TurboTax account and click on the option to Amend/Make Changes. Go to your state return to make the changes needed

If you need to amend a prior year use these instructions

Once you have completed the changes you will need to print, sign, date and mail in your tax return. Amended return cannot be efiled.
