When trying to electronically file both fed and NY state, I kept getting notices that I had to update. I tried to update from the top tool bar, and even re-started the computer but I kept getting the error message. As per the help section suggestion, I uninstalled and reinstalled. Now it wants me to spend $39 to download NY state tax forms. I have yet to be able to file them at all because of the error messages. I can not get past the 'you owe us $39' more dollars message.

I am sorry you are having this problem, I suggest you arrange for a callback from one of our agents. They can verify your payment and then send you the state program for free. Also, they will stay with you to get everything up and working.
