If you want the refund of the $173 erroneously paid to New York state, you must file a New York nonresident state tax return and claim zero income. You are not required to file the New York state tax return- even though you have to pay $40 for the state to TurboTax, you will still get money back.

I only worked in Missouri (Walmart) in 2019, after transferring from New York in 2018. My W2 shows that my employer paid $173 in taxes to NY erroneously. Am I required to file (and is it worth the $40 TT charge) taxes in NY? It also correctly shows taxes paid in Missouri and I am planning to file in Missouri.

Thank you
