Your state return will show a status of incomplete if you e-filed your federal return by itself and it has not yet been accepted. If your federal return has been accepted you can e-file your state return. E-filing a state return by itself is only allowed once a federal return is accepted. If you mailed your Federal return you must also mail your state return.

To complete your state taxes in TurboTax Online:

Sign into your TurboTax Online account.

Go to My Account then select My Tax Timeline..

Scroll down to the SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO section, click Add a state (you are not actually adding a state, this will just take you back into your tax return..

Click on the State Taxes tab.

Click Continue to start or complete your state taxes.

Click Done with State.

Continue through the flow to review and file your state taxes.

You may want to review the State Taxes section to confirm the return is complete.

Is this still true? I e-filed my federal, but skipped the state for now. When I go to e-file the state, it says I can't without a federal. I'm using TT Deluxe PC

I had already read that article. My Federal has been filed and accepted by the IRS. When I go to the file tab, it shows file federal (?) and it is checked. The next page is file state which is checked for e-file. On that page it shows the federal return has been transmitted. I did the check E-file status and it shows accepted. It's like the software doesn't show it accepted. It's still in transmitted state.

The next page says I must select the federal to file.
