I retired through School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS). I elected to enroll in Aetna Medicare Plan, dental and vision plans through SERS. The premium for this coverage is deducted from my monthly retirement payment - can I deduct these premiums from my Ohio State taxes?

Yes, you can deduct the premiums if you are paying tax on the entire disbursement- look at your 1099-R to see if the Box 1 amount is the amount you received in cash or if the premiums are added (they should be).

Not sure I completely understand. My insurance premiums are part of my monthly deductions just like federal and state taxes which result in my Net Pay. So, the amount in Box 1 is not the amount I received.

Yes, this is deductible because you are paying with pre-tax dollars! @MH108
