topic State taxes in State tax filing

Hi,

My son, a California resident, had moved to Washington DC. He lived and worked in DC during the entire 2019. For some reason, his employer took CA state taxes off his paychecks, not DC. Is it accurate? If not, could you please advise what can my son do at this point?

Thanks!

If you son worked in DC in 2019, his income is earned in DC and he must pay DC state tax.

He must now file a resident state return for DC and pay the DC state tax.

He must file a CA non-resident state return, indicate 0 for CA income and get a refund of CA tax withheld.
