Here's how to report your 1099-G in TurboTax Online:

Open or continue your tax return.

Search for unemployment compensation and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.

On the Did you receive unemployment or paid family leave benefits in 2019? screen, answer Yes.

Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 1099-G information.

Hello Gisele and TurboTax Team,

I have TurboTax and trying to file for 2019. I got a 1099-G California State Income Tax Refund (not sure why, filed with TurboTax in 2018. I did not have unemployment).

There is only one box in the form #2 with amount of ~$2K.

TurboTax asks me three questions:

Total Refund Received in 2019? --> ~$2K

Total of all your payments and withholding? --> there is no other dollar amount or information on the 1099-G, what do we need to do, leave it $0?

Tax Year of Refund (usually 2018)--> I left it as 2018

Your guidance and support is greatly appreciated.

In general, if you didn’t deduct state and local income taxes last year, you don’t need to pay taxes on your state and local tax refund this year.

For instance, if you didn’t itemize your deductions last year (you took the standard deduction) then your state tax refund is tax free this year.

If that is the case, the -$0- it is calculating is correct. If you itemized your deductions last year then the refund would be taxable on your 2019 tax return.

For itemized deduction, how do i get below information and how to calculate them?

- Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099
- Estimated tax payments for 2018
- Add any paid in 2019 for 2018 (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment to be made in January)
- Overpayment from 2017 applied toward your 2018 return
- Payments made with an extension of time to file
- Payments made when you filed your return
- Refundable credits

This is where you can find the information you asked about.

Amounts withheld on your W-2, W-2G, and 1099:

Once you enter these forms, TurboTax will transfer the amounts automatically.

Estimated tax payments for 2018:

Did you make any estimated payments for 2018? If not, ignore this item. If you did, look for:

Copies of Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals payment vouchers

Copies of estimated tax payment vouchers for payments made to your state and local tax agencies

Tax paid in 2019 for 2018: (it's common for the fourth quarterly payment to be made in January)

Did you make any estimated payments for 2018? If not, ignore this item. If you did, look for:

Copies of Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals payment vouchers for the 4th quarter of 2018

Copies of estimated tax payment vouchers for payments made to your state and local tax agencies for the 4th quarter of 2018

Overpayment from 2017 applied toward your 2018 return

Your 2017 1040, line 77

Payments made with an extension of time to file:

Did you even file an extension? If not, ignore this item. If you filed an extension, look on Form 4868 to see if you made a payment with the form.

Payments made when you filed your return.

Look on your 2017 1040, line 78.

Refundable credits

Your 2017 1040, lines 67-73.
