The refund from your 2018 state tax return, which you receive in 2019, does not affect your 2018 federal tax return. State taxes paid and state tax refunds do not necessarily affect your federal tax return at all. If there is any effect, a state refund is reported on your federal tax return for the year that you receive the refund, no matter what year the refund is for. State tax that you pay is reflected on your federal tax return for the year that you paid the state tax, no matter what year the payment is for. Your 2018 federal tax return will reflect the actual state tax that you paid in 2018, and any state refund that you received in 2018. The actual 2018 state refund that you received in 2019, and any state tax that you paid in 2019, will be reflected in your 2019 federal tax return.

My state refund was adjusted significantly. I think we had calculated $3,100.00. However, after it was recalculated, we only received $655.00. My question is that it seems that our federal income tax would also need adjusting in our favor since we did not receive the amount anticipated. Will you view it to see it we need to complete an amended return?

Thank you for your help. Please email me at

[email address removed]

Thank you very much.

No one else can look at your tax return. You are the only one who can access your account or your return. What you are saying is unclear. You say your state refund was calculated for $3100 but you received $655. For what tax year? Why do you think your federal should be adjusted? Do you mean you reported a 2017 state refund of $3100 on your 2018 federal return? Please clarify the tax years these amounts were for.
