I currently reside in North Carolina but work across the boarder in South Carolina. I don't receive any income from North Carolina and have only paid my vehicle property tax for NC. Do I still have to file some sort of taxes for North Carolina as well?

do I have to file taxes in NC as well? Yes, you do. Th...

do I have to file taxes in NC as well?

Yes, you do. The normal rules for interstate taxation are -

·
you file a
non-resident return for the states where you worked but did not live, reporting
only the income earned in that state.

·
you file a
resident return for the state you live in reporting all of your income, no
matter where it was earned. You claim on your home state resident return a
credit for taxes paid to other states that you worked in. If the out of state
income was from a state without an income tax, you would have no credit.

The result of
these rules is that you will pay tax on the income, but only once, and the net
result is it will be at the tax rate in the higher tax state.

 In Turbotax you
must follow this sequence:

·
Prepare your
federal return,

·
Prepare your
non-resident state return, then

·
Prepare
resident state return.

It is not critical to do the returns in the correct order. The reason it is recommended that you do the out of state return first is that you may need the tax from that state to enter in your resident state return to get a credit for it.

You can review the credit for taxes paid to another state on your North Carolina return to make sure you entered the correct tax from your South Carolina return. If it is correct, then you do not need to redo the returns.

You can delete the two returns and start over if you want, however.

The amount of tax paid to SC would be the tax liability on line 15 of SC 1040. The correct amount should typically carry over to the right place in the resident state return.

I also would advise you that you should always prepare your non-resident tax return(s) before working on your resident state returns. If you didn't do that, you can always delete the resident return, then work on the non-resident return(s) and complete them before moving on to the resident state return.

If you need to delete a state return to start it over, follow these instructions:

For the downloaded version of TurboTax:

Click "File" on the top left of the black banner

From the dropdown menu, click Remove State Return.

Click on the resident state return under the Return Description, then click Remove

On the popup, answer Yes to Are you sure you want to proceed

Complete your non-resident state returns

Add the resident state back on the "Your State Returns" page and work on it next.

For the online version of TurboTax:

On the left side menu, go to State Taxes and click on Your State Returns.

Click the trashcan to the far right of the resident state return

Click on the + Add another State button

Select the Non-resident state return(s) and complete those

On the Status of your state returns, click + Add another State to add back your resident state return and work on it next.

Yes, you are correct. The credit for your resident state (North Carolina) can only be calculated by using the tax liability for South Carolina (SC) and not total withholding.
