No, you can do just as many tax returns as you want with a desktop CD/Download program. Just click start a new return under File in the upper Left. Five of the Federal returns you prepare can be e-filed for free, returns after 5 will have to printed and mailed. This isn't a matter of paying for them, it's an IRS limit for personal tax preparation software.

Wit the state that comes free for your program, you can prepare as many state returns as you want for that state. You can print and file them on paper for free. E-filing each state costs $19.99. If you want to buy a different state, the charge for that state program will be the rate in effect when you purchase it, currently, $39.99
