I contributed funds to both of my grandchildren's 529 plans - Turbo tax is only allowing me to take the subtraction on Minnesota return, but I believe I would benefit from taking the credit instead. How do I accomplish this?

The biggest reason the software might be blocking the credit is your Minnesota Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). The maximum credit ($500) begins to phase out once your Minnesota AGI exceeds $96,220 (for 2025). If your AGI is above $198,200 (Married Filing Jointly) or $121,220 (All other statuses), you are no longer eligible for the credit at all.

If you are over these income limits, the subtraction is your only option ($3,000 for MFJ or $1,500 for others). If you are below those income limits and want the credit, you need to navigate to a specific screen in the Minnesota state interview:

Go to the State Taxes tab and start/revisit Minnesota.

Look for the section titled "Education Savings Account" or "529 Plan Contributions."

urboTax will ask for your total contributions.

After you enter the amount, look for a screen that says: "Choose a Credit or Subtraction."

Note: If your income is low enough to qualify for both, TurboTax usually picks the one that saves you the most money automatically. If it isn't giving you the choice, double-check your AGI on your 1040.
