Because your spouse is a part-year resident, Virginia law says that if you file jointly, you must both use Form 760PY (the Part-Year Resident form).

Ensure the dates are correct for residency:

Go to the Personal Info section.

Review your spouse’s residency. Ensure they are marked as Part-Year with their specific dates.

Review your residency. Ensure you are marked as a Full-Year Resident of Virginia. Your residency dates will be Jan 1 – Dec 31.

When you get to the Virginia state interview, the software will ask: "Which form do you want to use?" or "Do you want to file a joint part-year return?"

Select the option to file Jointly on Form 760PY. This will allow you to stay on one return while still identifying you as a resident for the whole year.

Since you are coming in as a VA resident and selected dates and another state, the program should pick up it is part year but you need to double check. I tried it in my program and got the correct PY return.

You always want to check your tax forms before filing.

To see your forms:

In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.

For online, see How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

Like the OP, I was a full time resident of VA; my spouse was a part time resident, and I entered the date she became a resident. Notably, the Virginia Dept of Tax states, "If you are a full-year resident and your spouse is a part-year resident, you can file a joint return on Form 760PY." So I completed the Federal interview with a filing status of Married Filing Jointly.

When I start the interview for Virginia, I am presented with only two options:

married filing a combined separate return

married filing a joint return

Each of the above options forces me to enter a start date for myself as well as my spouse. If I enter Jan 1 of this year, I am asked what my prior state was. I have yet to figure out the way forward, apart from restarting the Federal interview with filing status of Married Filing Separately, which is to my disadvantage.

[2025 TurboTax Desktop Deluxe 25.0000.0290]

Follow these steps to get your Virginia return prepared:

Go to the State Taxes tab and click Continue on the Let's work on your state return screen

Click File in the black banner at the top left, then select Remove State Return in the dropdown. Highlight your Virginia return, then click Remove, then click Yes to confirm removal.

Click Edit for your Virginia return

For the screen Did you have more than one state of residence in 2025? answer No

On What was your state of residence in 2025? answer Just Virginia, then click Continue

Go through the remaining Virginia screens and answer the questions on those screens.

You'll get to a screen Your Virginia taxes are ready for us to check. Click Edit for General Info

For Was Virginia your state of residence all year? select No

What was your state of residence in 2025? - select I had more than one state of residence, then Continue

The next screen will state that your are married filing a combined separate return, but you can switch to Married filing jointly by clicking on I need to change my Virginia filing status link and choose the filing status of Married filing a joint return. Click Continue

The next screen is Tell Us your Virginia County or City - click Back on the screens until you get to the Your 2025 Virginia taxes are ready for us to check. Next click Edit for Income and go through those screens to allocate income between Virginia and your spouse's other state of residence.

When you get back to Your 2025 Virginia taxes are ready for us to check, click Edit for Credits and taxes and go through those screens. Do the same for Other situations also.

Once you finish editing all the sections, click Let's check it over.

Once you click Continue you will get an error for your moved to or prior state of residence. Select Virginia from that dropdown, then Continue. The next screen will have a similar error - select Virginia on this dropdown as well - then Continue

When you get to the Run State Review screen select Run Review Again. The errors for the Virginia state return will be cleared.
