I neither lived in nor made money in VA, but am required to file there until I can terminate my VA residency. How should I answer TT questions like "what was your state of residence?" and "in which state did you make money?"

Someone may be able to help if you provide more information. You have not mentioned when you re-located from VA to Canada. Did that happen sometime in 2024? Or in 2025? Please be specific about when you lived and earned income in VA.

I lived in and made income in VA 2013-2015, but have not filed since 2016. I am backfiling for 2021. but I actually left VA in 2016.

@kiri The other very important piece of information you are leaving out -- are you a U.S. citizen? Why do you think you are still considered to be a "domiciliary resident" of VA if you left that state over ten years ago?

I am a US citizen, and was still a registered voter in VA until this year.

I thought the VA state tax website said that ceasing to file my state taxes doesn't terminate my state residency, that I had to file an official form or something, but maybe I misunderstood.
