Most health insurance premiums are deductible for filers of Michigan State income tax returns,. Examples would include premiums for medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance and prescriptions.

Insurance premiums not deductible would include premiums for long-term care, disability, loss of life and limb, and premiums paid by an employer with pre-tax contributions. If your premiums do not fall in any of those categories, they are likely deductible. You can learn more from the Michigan Department of Revenue.

It was helpful, but here is my follow up question.

Where do I enter my premium paid amount in my Michigan State income tax return?

I was in the section of the Michigan State Income tax return that allowed me to enter the medical premium amount of my auto insurance. I can't find that part of the form now when I review my Michigan State income tax form.

On my Federal return, I don't see where to enter health care premiums paid. We use the standard deduction as TurboTax calculated it as higher than my itemized deductions.

If you have potentially deductible medical expenses, enter them on the Federal return under Deductions & Credits. The itemized deduction information that you enter in the Federal return will transfer to the State return in case the deduction is allowable there.

When you open the Deductions & Credits section, depending on the version, Medical or Medical Expenses is where you would enter insurance premiums. Open that section and answer the questions. Your total medical expenses including insurance would have to exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income in order to be deductible, and added with your other itemized deductions would need to exceed your Standard Deduction.

See this article for more information regarding deductible medical expenses.

The portion of your auto insurance that is designated as medical, as you noted, is a separate deduction on the Michigan return. To deduct the medical portion of your Michigan auto insurance premium, please follow the instructions below:

Click Continue next to your Michigan return.

Answer yes to the question Do you want to review your total household resources?

Answer yes to the question Do you meet the qualifications? on the page Location of Property.

Continue through your return.
