Hello,

If I have an apartment in Maryland, but work and live in PA throughout the year.

More specifically, I work in PA a month at a time as a personal caregiver, and live in the house with the client. All my income is earned in PA. I lived in PA with the client for 7 months of the year, and i go to Maryland the other 5 months of the year where I have an apartment. I do not work in MD> I take all my stuff to PA each time I go and back to Maryland when I return. PA income tax was deducted from my paycheck, not MD.

What returns do I file for PA and MD? What income do I show on each? Who do I owe taxes to?

Re: Multi state residency

If you maintain a permanent residence in Maryland and only travel to Pennsylvania for work part of the year, you would file a Maryland resident state return and report all of your income there.

Because Maryland and Pennsylvania are reciprocal states with respect to wage income, and you are a Maryland resident, the only reason you would need to file a Pennsylvania return would be if your employer withheld Pennsylvania income taxes. In that case, you could file a Pennsylvania return to request a refund.

See this TurboTax help article for more information. If your employer is withholding Pennsylvania taxes, you can submit Form REV-419 to your employer to request an exemption.

See here for a list of all states with reciprocal agreements and this article for further explanation.
