I received a letter from the City of Portland indicating that my 2023 Oregon taxable income was above the taxation threshold for my filing status. I filed as head of my household, no dependents, so I don't understand

Apparently, the city of Portland has information indicating that you made enough income to be subject to the city's income tax.

According to Overview: SHS and PFA Personal Income Tax on Portland's Personal Income Tax Filing and Payment Information page, a personal tax is owed by single people with Metro and/or Multnomah County taxable income above $125,000, and jointly-filing married people with such income over $200,000.

According to the link, a "Joint" return includes the federal filing statuses of married filing jointly, head of household, and qualifying surviving spouse.

TurboTax allows for the filing of Portland city tax information with your original federal and Oregon state returns, but you can also file by following the instructions on the File your personal tax returns page.

@zgeorgousis

[Edited 1/20/2025 | 8:07 am PST to include Head of Household information]

"I filed as head of my household, no dependents..."

Are you sure you qualify to file as HOH? Generally, to qualify for head of household filing status, you must be able to claim a qualifying child or qualifying relative as a dependent.
