Can I file my Federal Taxes and pay for the $59 for deluxe due to an additional document, then file my State Taxes using Free Edition since it has no additional documents? I don't believe I should be charged that much for a simple, basic tax return, especially since the fee is almost half my entire return.

No, although you can file your state return after you file your federal return it will not be with the free version. You would have to use the same version.

Can I prepare and file just my state return with TurboTax?

You can try filing just your state from your state website if your state provides for that.

Although you can e-file your federal and state taxes together, if you choose to e-file your federal first, you'll have to wait until that return has been accepted before you can e-file your state. If your federal hasn't been accepted, or you printed and mailed it, you won't be able to e-file your state but you can print and mail a paper return.

Married filers: If you e-filed your federal using the joint married status, but you want to e-file your state returns separately, only one of you will be able to e-file. The other must paper-file their state return.

@katertot909

[Edited: 03/09/2024 | 2:32 PM PST]

I don't understand how TurboTax can justify charging $59 for each filings when only one has an extra document. This leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and I will be searching for another place to file. It really feels like a scam. Like I'm being charged for a service not rendered.

sesarch google for other tax prep software that is low cost or zero cost for federal.

@katertot909
