This is under Part time resident income allocations. Federal return uses total SS benefits. So the blank to fill in goes NORTH CAROLINA RESIDENT ADJUSTMENT. Since NC does't tax SS benefits, do I put in $0?

Thank you

You moved in or out of NC during 2023? On a part-year state return, you want to enter the amount of SS benefits that are NC sourced, so divide the amount based on how long you lived in each state. TurboTax knows the tax laws for NC, so SS benefits that are NC sourced won't be taxed. So, don't enter zero, enter the amount that applies to the time you lived in NC. If you moved in the middle of the year, you could apply half to NC and the other half to the other state you lived in for 6 months.

How to allocate income for Part-Year state returns. See unearned income

If your social security or railroad retirement benefits were taxed on your federal return, you may take a deduction for those benefits on your North Carolina individual income tax return. You may take this deduction because this income has already been included as part of your federal adjusted gross income, and North Carolina does not tax this income. This deduction will increase your refund or decrease the amount you must pay. TurboTax will walk you through this after you allocate your income by state.
