topic W-2 shows incorrect state in State tax filing

Company that I retired & receive a pension from changed payroll companies during the year. For some reason, the company put NJ as my residence for 3 months & withheld NJ state tax. I haven’t lived there for 25 yrs. I thought we had it straightened out & my current state of FL has no state tax. I received W-2 this week which shows 3 mos pension as NJ income. Does thus mean I need to file a NJ return now? I don’t care about getting the state withholding back, it wasn’t that much.

Maybe. If you are a nonresident and your income for the entire year was more than the filing threshold amount for your filing status, you must file a New Jersey nonresident tax return.

Single & MFS: $10,000

MFJ, HOH, Qualifying Widower: $20,000

1099-R right?

Pension distributions are rarely reported on a W-2.

No, this income is on a W-2…..it is income that was part of a supplemental pension program for highly compensated employees. It’s treated as current payroll.
