Your resident state of MA can tax ALL your income, regardless of where you earn it.

The state in which you work can tax you as a non-resident on the income you earn from work you do within its borders.

So if all your W-2 income was earned from a single employer in another state, it's entirely possible that your W-2 would show the same income for both states.

But you can take a credit on your MA return for income tax you pay to the non-resident state, so you won't be double-taxed.

Post back if this doesn't answer your question.

On your resident state tax return you are required to report all income that you received from all sources. If you worked in another state you must report the income received on that state's tax return, if the state has a personal income tax. Any taxes paid to the nonresident state will show as a credit on your resident state tax return.

You should have completed the nonresident state tax return before completing your resident state return so that the taxes paid to the nonresident state would flow to the resident state return as a tax credit.

Look at your Massachusetts tax return Form 1 on Line 30 to see if you entered the taxes paid to another state which flowed from MA Schedule OJC.

If not, then you should file a MA Amended tax return for tax year 2022.
