topic NJ resident, worked in Georgia and Florida in 2022 in State tax filing

Hello, I used turbotax to file my 2022 returns and am wondering if I did this correctly. I am a New Jersey resident. I did not work in NJ in 2022, but did work in Georgia and Florida. Florida did not require me to file a state return. I paid state income taxes on the money I earned in both Florida and Georgia, to New Jersey. Georgia then came up as owing a balance at the end of my turbotax return, which I paid (I did not have money taken out of my checks through my employer for Georgia state income tax, they only did NJ). Georgia has now sent me letters stating I owe additional money plus penalties- I have no idea where this is coming from since I already paid them what was due on TurboTax and did not make any additional money.

Please if someone could help, I am so confused as to what I owe to Georgia being a non-resident :(

thank you

Hi Banana357,

Based on your description, below is the state tax reporting framework:

As a GA nonresident, you report income earned/sourced in GA state only.

As a full year NJ resident, you report income earned in FL and GA in NJ resident tax return, but can take a credit for taxes paid to GA state to compensate double taxation.

Regarding the GA state letter owing additional money and penalties, please see the breakdown of the amount due. They could be from mis-allocation or missing GA income, or due to no payroll withholding all through the tax year 2022.

GA State expects you to pay estimated tax if you reasonably expects to have gross income that exceeds:

1) The personal exemption, plus
2) The credit for dependents, plus
3) Estimated deductions, plus
4) $1,000 of income not subject to withholding.

The required annual payment to avoid the underpayment penalty
is the smaller of:
• 70% of current year tax liability, or
• 100% of prior year tax liability

GA state assistance line is (877) 423-6711. Or please give us a call for further assistance.

Hope this helps. Thank you.

Kochu Kitty

You should not owe an underpayment penalty if this is your first year filing a GA return (your last year GA tax liability was $0).

Check your GA forms. You should have submitted Schedule 3 to calculate the amount of income taxable by GA. You do not just file a standard form reporting only your GA income. You report all your income and a ratio is calculated, of how much GA taxes, is calculated (most other states do something similar). If you told TurboTax you were filing as a non resident, this should have happened automatically.

The letter(s) you received from GA should include an explanation as to why you were charged additional tax/penalties.
