Hello community. First time asking here so thank you in advance. I live outside of the country and have not filed state taxes since I have no income. This past year I cashed out a life insurance policy and got a 1099-R, which was issued in the state of AZ, where I used to be a resident. Does receiving this 1099-R mean that I should file a state return?

Thank you

If you are NOT a resident of AZ then you do not need to file an AZ return. The 1099-R should have reflected your foreign address so it is not AZ sourced income even if the issuing company was in AZ.

Critter-3 thank you for your response! So, I imagine it went to the address I have listed in AZ where I used to live and still have family. No way I could have cashed it here in Mexico anyway.

OK so to clarify, if I am not there, there is no need for me to file a state return just for that 1099-R. Is that your opinion?

Thanks again

Correct however since the 1099-R was mailed to an AZ address expect the state to question why you are not filing an AZ return so be prepared to respond to that notice. If you had any AZ withholding then you will want to file a NON resident AZ return to get that money refunded.
