Hello,

I am filing my taxing using TurboTax Deluxe. I lived in DC from Jan 1st to Feb 28th in 2022. During these two months I used to work as a researcher in Baltimore and earned around $9,700. In March 2022 I changed job and moved to a different state.

My tax summary states:

DC state tax due

$4,704

This is a 48.5% tax rate. What Is the rate supposed to be in DC? How can I correct this in my return?

Thanks

Francesco

You need to file a Part Year DC tax return. In TurboTax you will allocate the income that you earned in Baltimore so that is the only income you pay tax on.

Thank you for your answer. I filed this: Part-Year Resident (Form D-40) as suggested by TurboTax for the period in DC. Then in the Wages & Income sections I have two W-2 forms one for the period in Baltimore; one for the period in Seattle.

However, the tax due to DC is still the amount of my first message.

Should I do something else?

Thanks a lot

Francesco

Yes. Your DC return initially includes all your federal income. You'll need to subtract your non-DC income.

Go to the screen "Subtractions From federal Income, Part-Year" and enter Income received While Residing Outside DC.

Hi!

Former part year DC resident here.

TurboTax asks when completing your DC state taxes:

"Subtraction From Federal Income, Part-year --

Enter any income received while residing outside DC. If none, enter zero."

Thanks to ERnieS0's comment, I interpreted that to mean that TurboTax by default used my ENTIRE federal income (box 1 on my W2(s)) to calculate my part year DC taxes. To correct this, they offer the prompt above to calculate how much you earned while residing in DC.

To get the value I entered in that box, I subtracted from my total federal income (W2 box 1) what I earned in the months I lived in DC. So the box should just contain what income you earned while living outside of DC (AKA the remaining part year). For the original post that would be what they made in their new job out of state.

This drastically reduced my taxes owed (as expected because I really surprised to receive an estimate that I owed thousands from residing in DC for just a few months when I normally have very simple taxes).
