Delete State Return

For some reason, TurboTax is including a NYS return when it's not required. Taxpayer is a NJ resident with no NYS income. How can I delete the NYS return?

To delete a specific form in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

Within your return, click on Tax Tools in the black menu on the left side of the screen.
Click on Tools.
Click on Delete a Form.
Scroll down to your form and click Delete.
Under Federal in the black menu bar click Wages & Income to get back into your tax returns.
Proceed entering/reviewing your return.

To do this in TurboTax Desktop you can follow these steps:

Within your return, click on the Forms icon in the upper right of the screen to switch to Forms mode.
Scroll down in the menu bar on the left and select your form.
Click the Delete Form button at the bottom left of the preview screen.
Confirm the deletion then click the Step-by-Step icon in the upper right of the screen.
Proceed entering/reviewing your return.

It appears that I have to delete each form in the NY return, one by one (the information page won't delete). Is that right? Is there a way to delete the whole return in one shot? Why was a NY return generated to begin with? I did not file a NY return for 2021. Although, I did download the NY program to file for other taxpayers who were required to file. Thank you.

Just a follow up question - when state software is ordered, does TurboTax prepare a return for that state for all returns that you work on, even if not relevant?

No. When you purchase the state, you will first need to be in the specific return that you need the state downloaded to. It will only be for that specific return.

I have tried every suggestion. I needed to do one return with a state but not my return. It will not let me get around NC. Driving me crazy.

Won't let me delete form by form.

You need to delete the entire state. Form by form will not remove the state.

You can delete your state return by following these instructions.

Note: If you've already paid your TurboTax state fees or registered your free version with your state return attached, you can't delete your state return.

Sign in and open a section of your return
From the menu, select State and then select Continue on the Let's get your state taxes done right screen
On the Status of your state returns screen, select Delete next to your state, then answer Yes

If you’ve already paid your state fees, you can’t delete your return, but you can start over by selecting Start Over next to your state return on the Status of your state returns screen.

I have to same problem.

I am using the Desktop version and cannot delete NC. I added NC for my other family members. I have never worked and stayed in NC it is still coming up and cannot delete it.

Please help.

Here's how to delete a state return in the TurboTax for Windows CD/Download software:

With the return open in TurboTax, switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon
From the File menu, choose Remove State Return. (This won't delete your state program, just the state tax return)
Select the return you want to delete and then select Remove
Answer Yes to confirm
If you want to start a new state return, select the Step-by-Step icon, and then select the State Taxes tab
