My employer moved from RI to MA mid year. W2 Box 1 $25K - RI State Box 16 $25K & MA State Box 16 $14K totaling $39K not $25K. Contacted employer as well as Paychex but they have turned it into a blaming revolving door. RI confirmed they are wrong. Tried to file taxes but it increases what is owed to my non-resident state.

What can I do to get it corrected outside of these 2 entities?

In order to answer your question, we need to know 1) your state of residence; and 2) the state or states in which you physically worked.

You'll be filing two state tax returns: a non-resident MA return, and a resident return for your home state of RI.

ALL your income is taxable by RI, including what you earned in MA.

Only the income you earned by working in MA is taxable by MA.

RI will give you a credit for the taxes you pay to MA, so in effect you won't be double-taxed.

In TurboTax, be sure to complete the non-resident MA return before you do your home state RI return, so that the program can correctly calculate and apply the credit.

Enter your W-2 as is. The program will allow you to allocate the proper amount of income to MA.
