Moved to Tennessee from Virginia early 2022.

Not sure if I pay part year state tax to Virginia, and if so, what is the cut off date.

Facts: Rented home in TN starting Jan. 19, 2022. Spent some time in Virginia fixing up home for sale which closed May 16, 2022.

Obtained TN drivers license, car registration/tags and registered to vote in TN on April 4, 2022.

So, I lived in TN well beyond the required 183 days, and lived in Virginia only a few weeks as the house was readied for sale. Virginia states you have to live there 183 or so days to be considered resident for tax purposes.

Yes, you need to file a VA return. The question is residency status. Unless you are moving back to VA within 6 months, you should qualify for part-year resident. Please verify on page 6 of 760PY Instructions. As a part-year resident, you would not be taxed on TN income, only VA.
