I have 4 mutual funds that earned exempt dividends in my home state and in other states. My 1099DIV document has section that identifies the percentage of the total dividend earned by state, so I can calculate the amount earned in each state. If I name each state and amount, does that mean I have to file a return to each state involved. The total dividend of all 4 funds is $2,433 - which shows up in the Dividends section of my home state (Ohio). The amounts allocated to each state is mostly less than $100. The highest dividend is $260 (Illinois)

Each state has a different filing requirement. The worst is PA at $33. IL would not require you filing a return. The IL Instructions state:

a nonresident, you must file Form IL-1040 and Schedule NR if you earned enough taxable income from Illinois sources to have a tax liability (i.e., your Illinois base income from Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 46, is greater than your Illinois exemption allowance on Schedule NR, Step 5, Line 50)

You can contact the Department of Revenue for the other states filing requirements.

I found this site to estimate the amount of taxes due each state (after calculating the $ amount earned in each state). A little tedious, but helpful.

https://www/forbes.com/advidsor/income-tax-caclulator
