When I begin my New York State return a page pops up asking for a contact phone number. In my case, two numbers are shown. Can I delete one of the numbers that is old?

One number is an old one that is no longer valid. I only want to keep the current phone number for contact info.

Yes. Delete the number that is no longer valid. New York asks for a telephone number in case they need to contact you about something.

The phone number is optional. New York says, "This entry will enable the Tax Department to correct minor errors or omissions by calling you rather than writing or sending back your return."

Many tax scams are done by telephone. Do not give out any personal information unless you are sure your are speaking with the Department of Taxation and Finance.
