Hi Bill,

The W # is $4,420 - which was the most that was ever in my HSA account for the year. (And is already inclusive of the $420 my employer contributed in addition to the $4,000 I contributed)

I only made contributions the traditional way, so I don’t have anything in line 13.
HDHP was family for the full year.
No excess HSA from 2021.

Issue could be that I simply didn’t receive a CA 549NR form? But I triple checked my HSA account and statements and not once did the total go above $4,420 - even though I earned like a silly 19 cents of interest - still not even $4,421.

Appreciate your expertise and help trying to figure this out!

Can you clarify how the HSA total is incorrect for California?

As you probably know, HSA contributions are not deductible in California, which TurboTax tries to adjust automatically. But we need to know what you believe is amiss before we try to tell you how to "correct" it.

In addition, because the HSA is considered just taxable investment account in California and is reported as such (this is not automatic), we need to know if you are talking about that instead.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I entered the HSA total reported on my tax form, $4,420, the max that was ever in there and called out that $4000 was self-contributed + $420 was employer contributed during my federal tax review, but as I progressed to the CA HSA total it auto populates and said that it “found” roughly $2,800 and was including that in my total. (Making my all-in total $7k+, without an option to adjust) I never had more than $4,420 in or contributed to my HSA during 2022, so it’s lightly frustrating. Greatly appreciate your thoughts/help 🙂

First, the HSA contribution that is with code W on your W-2 and any other employer contribution that was not part of the code W amount will appear on the screen "Here's the income that California handles differently" early in the CA interview. This amount appears (unless you change it in the CA interview) on form CA (540NR) on line 1h, column C.

If you made any contributions directly to the HSA custodian (not through your employer), this amount appears on the same form, line 13, column A.

All three of these amounts will end up on the 540NR line 16 to be added back to CA taxable income.

Can you see your California return? What are the numbers on form CA (540NR) on line 1h, column C and on line 13, column A? While we are at it, was the code W amount in box 12 on your W-2 $420 ( I want to make sure I understand this)?

What was your HDHP coverage in 2022? Family? Self-only? Partial Year?

Also, by chance, did you have an excess HSA contribution in 2021 that carried over to 2022? If so, how much was it?

Please note that it makes no difference how much was in your HSA at any given point, so please leave that aside.

I don't know what a 549NR form is, but you already have all the forms you need, I think.

"as I progressed to the CA HSA total it auto populates and said that it “found” roughly $2,800 and was including that in my total." and "Making my all-in total $7k+, without an option to adjust"

1. It auto-populates what where?

2. Where did it find $2,800 and how did it show it to you?

3. Where did it say, "it 'found roughly $2,800"? TurboTax doesn't say that. On what screen or form did you see this?

3. And where was it included in what total?

4. Making your all-in what? I don't what you are referring to nor where it is that you are describing.

You have lost me, so let's start over and be very explicit about what numbers are where.
