My son moved from MD to FL in May 22. He earned $31K in MD and paid $2,300 in taxes prior to leaving MD. When he enters the his W2 on Turbo Tax, it's telling him he owes another $6,500 in MD. That would be approximately 31% of his pay. The W2 box 16 (state wages) lists $31K and box 17 lists $2,300. I'm guessing that Turbo Tax is using his full year earnings ($113K) and having him pay MD income taxes for the money earned in FL. Not sure what is wrong as he indicated he moved to FL when setting things up at the very start. Any help?

He needs to file a part-year return for MD. FL has no state income tax.

Thank you. Wouldn't Turbo Tax automatically detect that? Or is that something he needs to do manually?

He needs to do that manually during the MD part-year interview.

First he needs to completely enter every scrap for the year in the Federal section, and ignore the MD part entirely...

Then when he goes thru the MD part-year tax return, he will be able to "allocate" what income belongs of MD. Just ani salary, interest, dividends, cap gains, etc, until he moved
