I live in NY and work for the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) teaching online. I have been paying taxes to MD but a CPA just told me that I should be able to have that changed and just pay taxes in NY. Is this correct?

That is correct. If you do not physically work in MD, you would not need to pay MD taxes. You would just need to pay NY taxes. If you occasionally visit the campus in MD to work, the days you are physically present in MD, you would need to pay taxes to MD for those days only.

Great! I wish I had asked this question 5 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of tax season headaches and money. Thank you very much!

Hi. I have a similar question - also work for UMGC in MD but live in NC. I paid MD tax for a long time because it was deducted from my pay until the last few years they started taking NC tax out of the UMGC pay instead. Does that mean I don't need to pay MD tax at all? Or do I still have to pay both? I can't find a legit answer anywhere.

Thanks!

If you did not physically work in MD, then the income is not MD source income and not taxable to MD. MD says for non-residents, "...income derived from... a profession carried on in MD" is MD source income. See the FAQ "If you are a Nonresident filer" in this MD reference.
