You will file part-year resident returns for California and Massachusetts. Thankfully, your company is reporting your income correctly on your W2. You will pay tax to California on the income you earned in California, and you pay tax to Massachusetts on the income you earn in Massachusetts. Each state will have an allocation or an apportionment screen regarding your income to verify that each state is using the correct amount of income to determine your tax.

Both states will pretend that all of your income is taxable in their state, and then prorate your tax to the amount of income actually earned in the state, but California will not tax Massachusetts' income and Massachusetts will not tax California's income.

On each state return, make sure you include your residency periods. For California, it was from January 1, 2018, until your move-out day in May, and for Massachusetts, it was from that day in May until December 31, 2018.
