Does the $20 fee for state e-file cover one return or more? You can file up to five Federal and State tax returns with one software purchase. And you can e-file a state return for an additional $20 fee. But do I have to pay $20 for each state return or does the $20 cover up to five returns like the software license? LRH

When you use the CD/download there is ALWAYS an extra fee to e-file the state return even though you had the software to prepare the state return. It starts out at $20 and on March 1 increases to $25. That fee is for each state return that you e-file. You can avoid it by printing and mailing the state return instead of e-filing it.

Is the fee $20 or $40 if you file two separate returns but for the same state?

That's not my question. I paid $20 for one state efile. If I file a second state return in the same state, do I need to pay the fee again? The software says I can file up to five returns with the same state but I can't find anything about how the state e-filing cost is charged.

Yes----you pay that state e-file fee every time you e-file a state return. It is not a one-time fee----it is per return.
