And for that second reason. Turbo Tax doesn't support Efiling prior year federal returns and you can only efile state if federal was efiled and accepted. So you can't efile state.

Even for the current year if you can't efile federal for some reason or it rejects you have to mail state too.

Hi - with everything that went on last year I didn't get round to filing my 2020 return. I've completed that now on the Turbotax desktop software and am ready to file. I can only file the federal return by mail, not E-file as the date has passed, so have printed that and mailed it. However NY says it will only accept E-file. I can't find a way to E-file only the NY return using Turbotax. Any help gratefully received!

According to New York's E-file requirement for individual taxpayers,

You're required to electronically file your return if you meet all three of the following conditions:

you use software to prepare your own personal income tax return; and

your software supports the electronic filing of your return; and

you have broadband Internet access.

When you’re using software that doesn’t support the e-filing of your return, you're not required to e-file. Such a requirement would be financially burdensome on the taxpayer.

All you really need to do is attach a brief statement to the back of your printed return, stating why you’re not e-filing.
