I found a data error on 2020 state return (only state) which will result in a refund. I haven’t yet filed for 2021. So should I assume my amended return refund will process and go ahead and enter that I received a refund on state when filing 2021 federal taxes? (Prior to amending, TT said I owed $ and paid accordingly)

No, because you did not actually receive a state refund in the year 2021, you paid state taxes during 2021.

When your amended return is processed, you will receive a refund in 2022 even though it will be for the tax year 2020.

To follow up.. I’m in Ohio which has a business income deduction and so I do not need to amend federal for 2020. Do I still need to include a copy of the federal when I mail the state amended return?
also… for the reason of amending, what I typed printed out illegible, can I just write it in? Seems to be a computer glitch and not my printer. And while on that subject, I experienced many glitches to the 2020 TT. The reason for this amendment I don’t believe was human error but programming… moot now but just to make you aware as the entry showed I answered “100” for business income which I never would have done. But I think it pulled that answer from “what percentage of the business do you own?”

Ohio does not require a copy of your federal return.

When filing a return by paper, you must submit legible copies of all income statements (W-2s and 1099s) showing the Ohio and/or school district withholding that you claimed on the return. Income statements that are handwritten, self-created, or generated by your tax preparation software are not acceptable proof of your withholding.

Schedule of Withholding. Paper filers must complete the Ohio Schedule of Withholding (and Schedule of School District Withholding) listing each income statement reporting Ohio (or school district) tax withheld.

You can hand write anything that is not legible.

Thankyou for that reply! And so just to be clear… I submit all forms THAT SHOW Ohio income tax withheld, correct?
because in my case, that would be only one W2. None of our 1099’s included any withholding and although it doesn’t matter to me to submit them, it may become confusing because they won’t add up to total income claimed on our 1040 as we must claim income not reported on any 1099.
thankyou

That’s right – just the forms that show your Ohio and/or school district withholding.

Other forms that only show federal withholding don’t need to be included.

Sorry… I have another question. As I’m reviewing Ohio Schedule A line 7 “IRS code 168k and 179 depreciation expense add back. There is an amount in there. Why is this? Is it because we can deduct income for assets purchased on 1040 but that deduction is not applicable to state income?

You cannot deduct the special depreciation allowance allowed on your federal return on assets placed in service during the year. So, you have to add that deduction on to your Ohio income in the current year. You still get the depreciation deduction, but it is spread out over several years.
