topic Schedule G-L Help for New York and Pennsylvania in State tax filing

Hi, my husband and I lived in PA for 10 months while working for a NY based employer (which doesn't have a reciprocal agreement with PA). In mid-Oct we moved to NY and continued working for the same company. As we are doubled-taxed while we were living in PA, we have to apply for Schedule G-L for getting credits for the tax we paid in NY. I have a few questions

1. In Turbotax, for filing Schedule G-L, they ask to fill out 2 columns, "New York Amount" and "My Amount". What is the difference between those two? for an example if I earned $80k for the whole year from a NY-based employer and out of that I earned $60K while living in PA for the same employer, then do I have to enter $60k in both "New York Amount" and "My Amount"?

2. What comes in line 4a and 4b in Schedule G-L?

Thanks for all the help!!!

The New York amount is the amount on income from your New York tax return, so it would be all your W-2 income because you worked in NY the whole year. The second column in the double-taxed income.

In your example, $80k would be the New York Amount and $60k will be Your Amount.

Lines 4a and 4b would be the same. 4a is your NY tax liability and 4b is the tax paid through withholding, estimated payments or a payment when filing your return. The number would be different if you set up a payment plan and only paid part of your tax.

In your case lines 4a and 4b would be the prorated amounts of NY income for the time you lived in PA.

The following is the instruction to compute the amount for Line 4a, PA Schedule G-L.

The amount of tax assessed in NY can be calculated by taking the amount earned in PA and dividing it by the total amount of NY income. Then you can use this percentage times the tax liability in NY (Line 50, Form IT-203). This will give you the amount of tax that is assessed in NY that is attributable to the income that is taxed on PA as well.
