topic CA 1099-G not transferring from 1040 Schedule 1, lowering refund in State tax filing

I ran my numbers through the free CA File system as double check and the state showed me getting a larger refund since my CA AGI was lower. TurboTax has my CA AGI higher, by the exact amount of my 1099-G tax refund amount.

Comparing printouts, TurboTax has Schedule 540 Section B Line 1 Column B is blank. The state shows this as the amount of my 1099-G. Back on Federal Schedule 1, line 1, TurboTax has the correct refund amount listed, but this amount doesn't look like it transferred to the state return.

Is this a bug in TurboTax?

Thanks

Why did you receive the 1099-G? If it was for Unemployment, Unemployment compensation is nontaxable for California state purposes.

TurboTax makes a subtraction adjustment on the California return.

Hi @MaryK4

In this case the 1099-G was for the CA state refund I received in 2021. From what I can tell, it shouldn't be taxed as income.

Thanks

Yes, the Schedule CA should have your State Refund amount in Column A (Federal) and Column B (Subtractions), since it is not taxable in either if you didn't Itemize Deductions.

Since we can't see your return in this forum, I would suggest you go through the 1099-G interview questions again.

If you're using TurboTax Online, try closing the program, clear your Cache and Cookies and revisit that section.

Whether your state refund is taxable depends on your tax situation. Generally, if you didn’t deduct state and local income taxes last year as an itemized deduction, your state and/or local refund is not taxable.

If you deducted your state and local income taxes last year and received a state tax refund last year then your total state tax refund that you received from the previous year may be taxable.
